Optimal Adobe InDesign settings

To ensure an optimised view of InDesign documents a few settings should be changed in InDesign.

If you work regularly with huge InDesign documents (e.g. catalogues), you should consider adjusting your settings to achieve smaller file sizes. We recommend testing your documents with the following setup and then change (if needed) preview size and numbers of pages gradually to reach the best compromise between file size and convenience.

Adobe InDesign CS5 and higher

Mac OS X: Menu InDesign -> Preferences -> File Handling
Windows: Menu Edit -> Preferences -> File Handling

  • Always Save Preview Images with Documents
  • Save Preview Images for „All Pages“
  • Preview Size: Extra Large 1024×1024

Adobe InDesign CS4

Mac OS X: Menu InDesign -> Preferences -> File Handling
Windows: Menu Edit -> Preferences -> File Handling

  • Always Save Preview Images with Documents
  • Preview Size: Extra Large 1024×1024

Note: Adobe InDesign CS4 saves only the preview image of the first page. In later InDesign versions it is possible to save preview images for multiple pages.
